One thing we are all tempted to love too much is the praise of others. We like acceptance and we want people to think we are great in whatever ways. But to be enslaved to this is a form of idolatry that erodes your integrity as a person.
One of the worst things Jesus condemned is making an idol of your own perceived moral superiority and authority. Motivated by a desire to be esteemed by others while controlling them, it never lives up to its own standards and ends up a persecutor.
Calvin called the human heart a “factory for idols,” which is what Paul was getting at when he wrote to the Galatians about people enslaving themselves to things that “by nature are not gods.” What exactly does this look like?
