culture
The fourth principle in the series involves the crossing of all cultural barriers. The Church is global and trans-cultural. American Christians are so immersed in our own culture, we have to beware our own ethnocentric assumptions.
Culture is always moving. Its currents cause our minds to drift with it. With our attention deficits, we easily take our eye off the ball. We float away from truth, toward confusion & error.
It seems “cool” to be counter-culture. People like the idea. But most people – even those who like it – don’t practice it. Most hardly recognize just how influenced they are by their culture. From the beginning Christians stood for truth over against whatever cultural claims, trends or pressures were dominant in their age. We are called to continue this today.
If it’s one thing our culture thinks it knows, it is that science is the be-all and end-all for truth. Is it? Does it stand opposed to religious beliefs? Part 1 of 2.
